Get to Know – Dr. Michael Starks

If you’ve ever been to St. Joe’s, chances are you know of or have met Dr. Michael Starks. He’s been a leader within St. Joseph General Surgery Practice for years.

Born and raised in Ketchikan, Alaska, Dr. Michael Starks was destined for medicine from the start. His father was a veterinarian and ran a clinic close to home. After making the decision between animal medicine and people medicine – there was no stopping him from his goals to become a doctor.

While studying for his medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Dr. Starks was a commercial fisherman. The commercial fishing industry is incredibly dynamic and challenging and prepared him well for his career in medicine.

Lucky for us, he completed his Surgery residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. While there, he met his wife, Carolyn, a native Mainer. They now reside with their family in Bangor. We’re very proud the both call St. Joe’s home.

He is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He’s particularly interested in thyroid treatments and surgery and has treated thousands of Mainers.
