How to Pick the Right Provider For You

Finding the right primary care provider is like finding a good pair of jeans. The hunt can be long and disheartening, but when you do find a good pair, you hold onto them forever.

And just like jeans, you want a provider that’s the perfect fit and addresses those “problem areas” of your health. They listen to you, make you feel comfortable, and they’re there when you need them.

If you’re searching for a PCP, here are a few tips to simplify the hunt:

1. Narrow the list.
If you’re overwhelmed by options, narrow your search by establishing the basics. Are you seeking care for yourself, your child, or your aging parents? Which providers serve that life stage? Do you have a preference towards a male or female provider? Do you have any scheduling limitations that will conflict with some providers? Is the provider accepting new patients? With this reduced list, you can get more specific in your search.

2. Determine what’s important to you.
Consider specialties, interests, or focus areas of providers and practices. Is it important to you to have access to specialty care in dermatology or nutrition counseling? Geriatrics or osteopathic manipulation? Identify any “must have” specialties to further narrow your search. If none apply, ask yourself if there are any “must have” personality traits.

3. Location, location, location.
How far are you willing to travel to visit your PCP? It’s important to find a provider within a reasonable geographic range so that getting to appointments doesn’t feel like a chore. For many, convenience and proximity are huge factors, which is why we have locations in Bangor, Brewer, and Hampden. For other patients, the right provider is worth the drive!

4. Ask family and friends.
Word of mouth is a powerful thing! Talk to friends and family to see who they recommend and who they think would be a good fit. Nobody knows you or your personality better than loved ones!
